Mary Jo Haddad Appointed to Order of Canada

Toronto / 15 July 2010 – HPME congratulates Mary Jo Haddad on being appointed a Member of the Order of Canada. Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, made the announcement on 30 June 2010.

An adjunct faculty member in HPME, Haddad is also an alumna of the department’s MHSc in Health Administration program. Currently serving as the president and chief executive officer of the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Haddad has enjoyed a long and influential career focused on promoting and advancing children’s health care.

"We are deeply proud of Mary Jo’s immense accomplishments," says Louise Lemieux-Charles, the chair of HPME. "Her record in health-care services leadership is outstanding."

In 2009, Haddad received the HPME Society of Graduates’ Leadership Award, in recognition of her leadership at the local, provincial, and national levels.

The Order of Canada is one of the country’s highest civilian honours. It recognizes a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to community, and service to the nation.

HPME Alumnus becomes CEO of the Rick Hansen Institute

Toronto / 4 February 2010 – HPME congratulates alumnus Bill Barrable on his appointment to the position of chief executive officer (CEO) of the Rick Hansen Institute. Bill is a graduate of HPME’s MHSc Health Administration program.

"I am not surprised that Bill has achieved such a prominent position," says Tina Smith, the director of HPME’s MHSc Health Administration program (and a former classmate of Bill’s). "Both when he was a student here and since graduation, Bill has proven himself to be a dedicated and highly effective leader in Canada’s health care and voluntary sectors."

The Rick Hansen Institute is an independent organization that addresses the needs and develops solutions for people living with spinal cord injuries. Prior to joining the Institute, Bill served as the chief executive of British Columbia Transplant. Among his many other accomplishments, Bill is also the co-founder and director of Natalus Life Science Capital (VCC) Ltd. In 2001, he became the founding chair of the board of directors of the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research. And in 1998, Bill was named one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40.

HPME Alumnus Named One of Canada's Most Powerful Women in 2009

HPME congratulates MHSc alumnus Catherine Zahn (MHSc 1995) on being named to the 2009 Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100. The list, published annually by the Women’s Executive Network (WXN), honours the achievements of 100 Canadian women in all fields of endeavour.

Catherine is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Canada’s largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital. Until recently, she held the position of Executive Vice President for Clinical Programs and Practice at the University Health Network (UHN). Catherine was recently awarded the HPME Society of Graduates' 2009 Innovation Award for her role in developing a chronic disease management (CDM) model for diabetes across Ontario. HPME celebrates Catherine's leadership and achievements. Congratulations!

SOG President, Anne Wojtak, Arbor Award 2009 Recipient

Since graduating from the Faculty of Medicine in 1994, Anne has provided tremendous and transformative support and leadership to the Department of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation (HPME). As alumni president, she has helped champion the department, raising its profile through leading, directing and managing key annual educational events, including the yearly recognition dinner and alumni awards. She has also been a stellar contributor to the alumni e-newsletter, sponsored the annual student research day and given her time to the HPME/Alumni Convocation Lunch. Anne was instrumental in organizing the inaugural HPME Alumni booth at the Ontario Hospital Association conference, providing an integral space for alumni, friends, faculty and potential students to connect. She has won the praise of her fellow alumni for her efforts!
