Admission Requirements

MSc Admission Requirements

  • 4-year undergraduate degree in a health profession from an accredited University (BScN, BScOT, BScPT, DMD, MD, MScN, etc.). MSc applicants should have graduated from a 4-year undergraduate program with at least a B+ standing in the last two years of study.
  • Statement of intent which identifies an area of research interest compatible with the expertise and interests of potential thesis advisors.
  • Two confidential letters of reference from academic and/or professional supervisors or other appropriate contact.
  • Relevant research experience.
  • Minimum release time of 3 weekdays.
  • Commitment to a career in research as an independent investigator able to compete for peer-reviewed funding.


PhD Admission Requirements

  • An excellent record of scholarship and an aptitude for research. PhD applicants should have a 4-year undergraduate degree in a health profession from an accredited University (BScN, BScOT, BScPT, DMD, MD, MScN, etc.) and should have graduated from their Masters program with at least a B+ average.
  • PhD applicants will ideally have completed a thesis Master's degree or have equivalent research experience. Those students without a thesis Master's or relevant research experience may be eligible for the MSc/PhD Transfer Program.
  • Two confidential letters of reference that indicate to the admissions committee the applicant's preparation and competence to conduct research studies.
  • Applicants are also requested to provide a statement of intent that includes: an outline of their research interests; a statement of their interest in health services research; and a description of the specific areas of research they would like to pursue.


Before You Apply

  • All potential clinical epidemiology students are encouraged to discuss the Program with a clinical epidemiology faculty member.
  • Applicants from outside the University of Toronto, as well as applicants who have not had mentorship from a clinical epidemiologist during their clinical training (this category will include many non-physician applicants, as well as physician applicants from specialties without a strong tradition of clinical epidemiology scholarship) are encouraged to contact the Graduate Assistant, Amber Gertzbein, clinepi.grad@utoronto.ca, prior to preparing their application.
