Health Care System and Challenges for Physician Leadership

Increasing Awareness of Yourself and Others The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
Many elements go into making an effective leader including excellence in communicating, decision-making, managing change and conflict, and developing well-functioning, high-quality teams. Effective leadership also requires an awareness of yourself and others. Psychological type is a valuable tool that can help you:

  • Better understand yourself, and the assets and liabilities of your typical reactions;
  • Understand others and how you can capitalize on their differences; and
  • Gain perspective on how different people approach and perceive issues, process information and make decisions.

Leading Change and Influencing People
The most important role of a physician leader is to lead change of various kinds (individual, organizational, and strategic). This session will help you understand the change process and give you the tools to lead and implement change at multiple levels, to overcome change barriers, and to build teams and optimize organizational performance. You will work in small groups to discuss real-life examples of challenging change initiatives. You will leave with a tool-box of tactics and resources to effectively lead change in your organization.

DAY 3

Leadership for Quality and Patient Safety
One of the most challenging tasks for physician leaders is assessing and improving quality at both the individual practitioner level and the organizational level. Based on the heightened focus on patient safety and quality in both the US and Canada, this session will address: strategies for effective assessment systems; approaches to reducing medical error and improving patient safety; and techniques for changing physician behaviour.

Accurately measuring healthcare delivery will be the key to shaping its future. Understanding how hospitals are funded is critical to planning and decision-making for clinical programs and services. This session will also outline the approaches to hospital funding, use of case mix groups and the use of utilization measurements and other modifying factors in funding models.

This session will help you develop problem solving skills and provide you with a variety of practical strategies and tactics to become a successful negotiator in any context.
